All three bicycle counters now active: monitoring of cycling and pedestrian flows between Gorizia and Nova Gorica underway
As part of the European project BorderLabs CE, which focuses on sustainability and ecological transition in border areas, the installation of the three bicycle counters included in the pilot action developed by EGTC GO to monitor cycling and pedestrian flows between Gorizia and Nova Gorica has now been completed.
Following the installation of the fixed bicycle counter in front of Parco della Rimembranza in Gorizia, which began in June, the two mobile devices have also been deployed at the other selected locations: the first at the intersection of Via Giustiniani and Via del Rafut, and the second in Via degli Scogli, both close to the border. All three devices, both fixed and mobile, were activated several weeks ago and are now fully operational.
The installation of the bicycle counters is part of the pilot action implemented by EGTC GO within the BorderLabs CE project. The initiative aims to collect data on cycling and pedestrian flows along some of the main routes connecting Gorizia and Nova Gorica, supporting sustainable mobility planning and enhancing the value of the cross-border cycling infrastructure developed in recent years across the area.
The two mobile bicycle counters are equipped solely with a laser sensor that transmits data to dedicated software and can be easily removed and relocated. The fixed bicycle counter, on the other hand, features a display showing real-time daily and annual bicycle traffic figures.
The detection system used by all three counters relies on laser technology to identify cyclists and pedestrians. The sensor records a series of points that allow it to accurately recognize the profile of a bicycle or a person. In particular, it can count cyclists and pedestrians, distinguish between the two categories, and detect the direction of travel. All three counters monitor both pedestrian and bicycle traffic, although the display on the fixed unit shows bicycle counts only.
The sensor remains highly accurate even when detecting groups of users and is equipped with a processing device that analyzes the signals received from the scanner to generate detailed traffic data. The collected information is transmitted to software accessible to municipal offices for download and analysis. The software also supports a range of additional analyses, identifying the busiest hours and days and providing weather-related data.
