Success for La Milanesiana in Gorizia: The Intelligence of Borders
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Verdi Theatre in Gorizia hosted a major cultural event dedicated to The Intelligence of Borders, the central theme of the evening. The initiative, part of the La Milanesiana festival conceived and directed by Elisabetta Sgarbi, was co-organized by the Municipality of Gorizia and the EGTC GO, with the support of Civibank, as part of the GO! 2025 program.
The first part of the evening featured writer and Germanist Claudio Magris, winner of the 1997 Strega Prize and an iconic voice in the reflection on the concept of borders and their transcendence. Magris read to the audience a selection of pages from the book he co-authored with writer Paolo Di Paolo, Inventing a Life. A Dialogue.
The event continued with a stimulating conversation between Russian director Aleksandr Sokurov, Golden Lion winner at the Venice Film Festival in 2011, and film critic and professor Aliona Shumakova, his long-time cultural mediator and translator. The evening concluded with the showing of two restored works by the director: Zhertva vechernyaya / The Evening Sacrifice (1988) and Elegiya dorogi / Elegy of the Crossing (2001), films that explore themes such as pain, memory, and spirituality through a unique and unmistakable lens.
