Work has recently begun on Mount Sabotin, managed by the EGTC GO, involving vegetation clearing, tree pruning, and maintenance of the road leading from San Mauro to the platform above the Osimo road (NSA 55). The estimated duration is about two weeks, depending on weather conditions.

The interventions on the Italian side of Sabotin are financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia 2021–27 Cooperation Programme, within the project Beyond Walk of Peace: from Crossborder Historical Research and Cultural Heritage to European Trail and Stories (BeWoP). The project lead partner is the Fundacija Poti miru v Posočju, and project partners include EGTC GO, ZRC SAZU, PromoTurismo FVG, the Municipality of Miren-Kostanjevica, and the cultural association èStoria.

BeWoP aims to enhance the Walk of Peace route from the Alps to the Adriatic. The works on Sabotin seek to connect the already developed Slovenian side with the Italian side, creating a single large cross-border open-air museum of the First World War. The total value of the BeWoP project is €1,321,591.24, of which EGTC GO's budget is €194,985.00.

In detail, the works starting these days include:

  • mowing and removal of shrubs along and around the platform located above NSA 55;

  • minor repairs in the surrounding areas along and around the platform above NSA 55;

  • cleaning and weeding of green areas inside and outside the platform;

  • clearing and removal of debris from the drainage channel located on the right side (ascending toward the platform) of the municipal access road from the Villa Vasi area in San Mauro to the platform;

  • restoration of the damaged road surface on the upper section of the same municipal road;

  • tree pruning and mowing of grass, shrubs, and greenery on both sides of the road from Villa Vasi to the platform;

  • chipping of plant waste.

The estimated cost for these works is around €7,500. The enhancement and redevelopment of the access area to the Italian side of Mount Sabotin, considered important and supported by the Municipality of Gorizia, will continue in the coming months with further interventions, including the installation of signage in various parts of Gorizia. Several elements of urban furniture will also be installed on the platform above NSA 55 (Osimo road). The overall expenditure is expected to be approximately €79,500. All works are scheduled to be completed by early autumn.

Following the completion of the access area improvements, BeWoP also plans to prepare a detailed executive project for the restoration and enhancement of the historical and monumental heritage related to the First World War located on the Italian side of Sabotin, in connection with what has already been developed on the Slovenian side through the Walk of Peace, building on the feasibility study carried out under the Walk of Peace+ project.

In addition to the improvement works on the Italian side of Mount Sabotin, EGTC GO and other partners will also organize two musical events in the evocative setting of the Church of San Valentino on Sabotin. These two events, with details still being finalized, are scheduled for August 9 and 26.

Lastly, as part of the BeWoP project, a concert by the British ensemble Voces8 will take place this Friday, June 20, at the basilica on Monte Santo – Sveta Gora.
