Museums and historical and cultural heritage: for a European governance, for the promotion of peace

26.02.2026
GORLICE

A European governance of museums and Great War itineraries aimed at fostering the protection of a unique historical and cultural heritage, that promotes the values of peace and peaceful coexistence among European peoples. This was the key theme of the conference held in Gorlice, Poland, from 24 to 26 February within the framework of the Interreg CE GOV4Peace project, in which a delegation from EGTC GO also took part, together with representatives of local stakeholders. Due to the synergies between the two projects, the visit also took place within the Interreg Ita-Slo BeWop (Beyond Walk of Peace) project, in which EGTC GO participates as a partner, while it is an associated partner in GOV4Peace.

During the intensive three-day programme, several thematic sessions took place with speakers from the European partner countries: Italy, Slovenia, Poland, Belgium, Hungary, France and Slovakia. Topics discussed included the GOV4Peace pilot actions, testing of the dedicated digital governance tool, as well as future project activities, including the preparation of the pilot evaluation report with a revised governance model, concrete implementation solutions in functional areas with different maturity levels, digital tools and platform, and action plans. Among the speakers was Marco Marinuzzi, consultant for EGTC GO within BeWoP, who presented on the enhancement of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Great War across the Council of Europe Cultural Routes and its inclusion in UNESCO heritage, linking the GOV4Peace and BeWoP projects.

In addition to seminars and conferences, participants in the study visit immersed themselves in local history by visiting several First World War military cemeteries and reflecting on the governance of war and peace heritage. On the final day, a forum on the European heritage of the Great War was also held, where each partner present presented their related activities. A public conference was also organised on the creation of a peace trail in the Carpathians, including an exchange of good practices. The conference concluded with the partners signing a letter of support for the establishment of the First World War Museum in Gorlice.
