21st international history festival èStoria

The èStoria Festival proposes itself as a point of reference for historical and historiographical discussion and debate in a problematic key on the great changes that have marked the course of history, from its origins up to the closest present day. The aim of the 2025 edition of èStoria, which will take place from 29th May to 1st June, is to focus on the theme of the ‘City’, declining it as usual with a historiographical but also interdisciplinary approach, which - through a rigorous historical perspective entrusted to the most authoritative voices on the historical and cultural scene - interweaves literature, cinema, music, art, anthropology, psychology, philosophy, economics and other subjects. Different aspects of social history, economic history, gender history, cultural history, to name but a few of the fields of study, which are usually examined during the Festival, will be explored.
New this year is a cross-border section, with events to be held in Nova Gorica and/or events in the Slovenian language with simultaneous translation, i.e. events in Italian with simultaneous translation into Slovenian. These activities are part of the Interreg Italy-Slovenia Beyond Walk of Peace project.
Furthermore, this year EGTC GO will curate two thematic panels.
The first, entitled ‘The care of shared cities’, will be held on 29 May at 6 p.m. at the Aula Magna of the Santa Chiara University Pole, and will be a reflection proposed by Prof. Gregorio Arena, in dialogue with Prof. Roberto Louvin, on the concept of ‘shared care’ of cities, in which the active role of communities in the management of the common heritage will be highlighted. An approach that EGTC GO concretely pursues through initiatives involving the citizens of Gorizia and Nova Gorica in the construction of a shared, open and resilient urban space. Moreover, the proposed theme is also part of the wider reflection that EGTC GO has already started on the legacy of GO! 2025 and its medium-long term impact on the cross-border territory.
On Thursday 29 May at 7.30 p.m. there will also be ‘The tattoo over time, the tattoo today. From urban practice to artistic expression’, at Sala Dora Bassi, a meeting realised in collaboration with MUDEC Museo delle Culture di Milano (Sole 24 ore Cultura - Comune di Milano). With the panel dedicated to tattooing as a language and cultural phenomenon, the EGTC GO will open a reflection on the relationship between identity, body and urban transformation, aligning itself with its vision of culture as a vehicle for dialogue and inclusion. Historian Guido Guerzoni and artist Alex De Pase will explore its millenary roots and contemporary functions, between stylistic innovation and personal narratives. A journey through history, subcultures and social transformations, to understand why this art form has become a mass phenomenon. In a year in which Gorizia and Nova Gorica propose themselves as a European laboratory of coexistence and creativity, this thematic choice emphasises the function of culture as a mirror and engine of social transformations, in line with the intercultural and multidisciplinary approach that guides the action of the GECT GO.
